Tuesday Musical, presenting concerts in Akron by world-acclaimed musicians and education and community engagement programs throughout northeast Ohio, has three new board members and two new officers as of July 1.
Linda Liesem of Bath is Tuesday Musical’s new President and George Pope of Akron is the new Vice President/President Elect. Both are longtime board members. Continuing officers are Treasurer Paul Mucha of Stow, Secretary Marianne Miller of Massillon, and Governance Committee Chair Maggy McClure of Akron.
New at-large board members are Mark Greer of Akron, Claire Purdy of Bath and Shirley Workman of Akron.
Mark Greer coordinates the City of Akron’s Great Streets initiative, managing 12 neighborhood business districts throughout the city to promote increased business development and retention, safer neighborhoods, enhanced aesthetics, urban design and public space, improved transportation conditions, and greater community engagement. He also serves on the Kenmore Neighborhood Alliance Planning Committee and is a member of Torchbearers Class of 2020, serving on both the Leadership and Development Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. He previously served as Program Coordinator at Leadership Akron, where he led the Diversity on Board program, aimed at increasing minority representation on public and nonprofit boards. A past winner of Tuesday Musical’s Annual Scholarship Competition, Greer graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Music, magna cum laude, in Music Performance, and Kent State University with a Master of Music in Piano. He is an accomplished pianist and composer, making his Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall in 2006.
Claire Purdy, a longtime Tuesday Musical subscriber and member, graduated from Copley High School where performing arts played a major role in her high school career. Hoping to work in performing arts management, she continued pursuing these interests at The University of Akron and worked as a student assistant in the E.J. Thomas Hall Ticket Office. Upon graduating from UA in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Purdy began her career with Arthur Andersen in Cleveland as a public accountant. Four years later, through contacts made during college, she was asked to become finance director of the Ohio Ballet. In 1991 she joined the UA Controller’s Office, ultimately becoming associate controller. Purdy retired from UA in 2015 while serving as director of accounting systems, where she was responsible for the design and maintenance of accounting information systems.
Shirley Workman, also a longtime subscriber and member of Tuesday Musical, is the owner of Arlington Self Storage, Coventry Estates Retirement Community, and a U-Haul dealership. A graduate of Leadership Akron’s NEXT Program, she also served 15 years on the board of the Ohio Manufactured Housing Association in Columbus and is a past president of the Akron Boards of Trade Council. She received a Bright Star Award from the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce and was a six-year board member. She also received a commendation from the White House when her dealership was selected to handle all ground-transportation needs for one of President George W. Bush’s visits to NE Ohio. She is now on hiatus from traveling more than 40,000 miles a year towing and racing a 1991 six-speed Corvette, becoming a two-time ladies national champion of the National Council of Corvette Clubs and setting several track records — some of which still stand today.
Continuing board members are Stanislav Golovin of Beachwood, Teresa Good of Silver Lake, Jennifer Stenroos of Bath, Jamie Wilding of Hudson, and Akron residents Cheryl Lyon, Charles Nelson and Fred Specht. Bobbie Eaton of Akron has rejoined the board as chair of the Hospitality Committee.
