Akron residents Theron Brown and Sally Childs are joining the board of Tuesday Musical. Beginning July 1, Brown will be an at-large member and Childs will be secretary.

Known in the region as an accomplished jazz pianist, Theron Brown is an Assistant Professor of Practice at The University of Akron School of Music. He also coordinates Curated Storefront’s Artist Residency Program at the I Promise School in Akron and is an educator for the interactive piano learning app “Playground Sessions.”

Brown is the founder and artistic director of the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival, which takes place annually in Akron’s downtown historic district. He performs and tours regularly with his trio that includes Zaire Darden on drums and Jordan McBride on bass. He auditioned for and was cast as young Herbie Hancock in the 2016 film “Miles Ahead,” directed by and starring Don Cheadle. In 2019, he released his debut album titled “No Concepts” and is now working on his second album. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from The University of Akron.

A longtime music educator, Sally Childs completed 42 years teaching band, orchestra, and choir (k-12) in various school districts in Ohio. She retired from Akron Public Schools as the Fine Arts Learning Specialist.

Childs has served on committees in the Ohio Music Education Association, was an active adjudicator, and has served on multiple arts boards in Akron. She now volunteers for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. She holds degrees from Baldwin Wallace University, The Ohio State University, and The University of Akron.

Also serving as board officers for Tuesday Musical are President George Pope of Akron, Vice President/President Elect Claire Purdy of Bath, Treasurer Paul Mucha of Stow, and Governance Committee Chair Linda Liesem of Bath.

At-large board members include Stanislav Golovin of Beachwood, Teresa Good of Silver Lake, Louise Harvey of Seville, Bryan Meek of Cuyahoga Falls, Marianne Miller of Massillon, Landon Nyako of Barberton, Jennifer Stenroos of Bath, Jamie Wilding of Hudson, and Akron residents Bobbie Eaton, Mark Greer, Cheryl Lyon, Fred Specht and Shirley Workman.

Founded in 1887 and now an Akron anchor arts organization, Tuesday Musical presents classical, jazz, and world music concerts in Akron by world-acclaimed musicians as well as education and community engagement programs throughout northeast Ohio. More at www.tuesdaymusical.org.
