Ambassadors for their country’s cultural excellence, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and violinist Nicola Benedetti are coming to Akron for a concert on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Part of Tuesday Musical’s 2022-23 Akron Concert Series, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall, 198 Hill St., Akron.

Tickets start at $19 at tuesdaymusical.org and 330-761-3460.

Nicola Benedetti, a fellow Scot and youngest-ever recipient of the Queen’s Medal for Music, will join the orchestra for Bruch’s Violin Concerto. Also on the program is Mendelssohn’s spellbinding Scottish Symphony, inspired by the composer’s travels to Edinburgh.

Composer Anna Clyne’s Stride will open the concert. A 2015 New York Times profile described the GRAMMY-nominated Clyne as a “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods” while NPR has described her as “fearless.”

Audience members are invited to start the evening in EJ’s intimate Flying Balcony Club with a Concert Conversation between local theatre aficionado Ian Haberman and Scottish Chamber Orchestra CEO Gavin Reid at 6:45 p.m.

Known for his work as an actor and past artistic director with Akron’s Weathervane Playhouse, Ian Haberman is an attorney and court mediator for the Medina County Court of Common Pleas. He has also served on the boards of the Medina County District Library, the Medina County Park District, and Hospice of Medina County.

Tuesday Musical will provide complimentary refreshments and wine for the Concert Conversation. Opening at 6:30 p.m., the Flying Balcony Club is on the top floor of EJ and accessible by elevator.
