Wynton Marsalis, Kyiv Orchestra part of Tuesday Musical’s new season

The Kyiv Virtuosi Symphony Orchestra on March 12 and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on April 20 are part of Tuesday Musical’s 2023-24 Akron Concert Series.

The six-concert series opens Oct. 24 with Latin Grammy winner Cuarteto Latinoamericano connecting the music of iconic Mexican composers with the art of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and other visual artists of their country.

The innovative Akropolis Reed Quintet comes to Akron on Nov. 7, The King’s Singers bring holiday music on Dec. 5, and jazz and classical pianist Aaron Diehl performs with his trio on Feb. 13.

All six concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Hall, 198 Hill St., Akron. Five are on Tuesdays, while the season finale with Wynton Marsalis is on Saturday, April 20.

On sale now at tuesdaymusical.org and 330-761-3460, full-season subscriptions begin at $90 for all six concerts. Pick-four concert packages begin at $65. Single-concert tickets start at $19 and go on sale Aug. 29.

“From legendary artists to rising stars, we’ve carefully curated this season to showcase exceptional performers in classical, jazz, and world music,” says Cynthia Snider, Tuesday Musical’s executive director.

“Our audiences have been growing in recent years, in part because we’re offering exciting and diverse music they haven’t experienced before and can’t find elsewhere in our region,” adds Snider.

Cuarteto Latinoamericano with “Mexico, A Musical Journey” on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — Tuesday Musical’s 2023-24 season opens with Latin Grammy winner Cuarteto Latinoamericano and art scholar Benjamin Juarez of Boston University exploring connections in Mexican visual art, history and culture through the music of six iconic composers alongside a narrated multimedia presentation of paintings by such artists as Frida Kahl and Diego Rivera.

Akropolis Reed Quintet on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — The first reed quintet on the Billboard Charts, Akropolis Reed Quintet has “taken the chamber music world by storm” (Fanfare), winning seven national chamber music prizes, including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal. Experimenters at their core, Akropolis has collaborated with poets, a metal fabricator, dancers, and more. In Akron they will perform a mix of new and familiar works.

Holiday concert by The King’s Singers on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — The King’s Singers of Great Britain has represented a gold standard in a cappella singing on the world’s greatest stages for 50+ years. Plus, the British six-singer ensemble has released more than 150 recordings and won multiple Grammy and Emmy awards.

Aaron Diehl Trio on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — Aaron Diehl has made an indelible mark on the jazz world. Now the classically trained pianist/composer is drawing acclaim for tackling classical works with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and more. As this season’s Margaret Baxtresser Pianist, The Columbus native and Steinway artist is this season’s Margaret Baxtresser Pianist. The two-part performance includes Diehl’s acclaimed “Hidden Visionaries” program of Black American composers, followed by a performance by his own jazz trio.

Kyiv Virtuosi Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — Only touring the United States in March 2024, Ukraine’s foremost symphony orchestra is coming to Akron with a powerful duo piano program. Based in Ukraine's capital and now in residence in Italy, the ensemble unites talented musicians from throughout Ukraine, most of whom are competition winners. Conducting is Grammy-nominated cellist Dmitry Yablonksy, also conductor laureate of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on Saturday, April 20, 2024, 7:30 p.m. at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron — The grand finale of Tuesday Musical’s 2023-24 Akron Concert Series features an evening of large-ensemble jazz at its pinnacle, led by a beloved jazz master. The sensational Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra showcases 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz today. Trumpeter extraordinaire and 9-time Grammy Award-winner Wynton Marsalis is an iconic figure in the evolution of the art form and a tireless advocate for jazz as America’s classical music.
