Music Education Required Materials
Applications for Tuesday Musical's 2026 Scholarship Competition will be accepted only online from January 1 through February 1, 2026.
You must also submit the following items to scholarship@tuesdaymusical.org no later than March 1, 2026:
- Your essay (up to 500 words) focusing on your motivation for choosing a career in music education and a statement of short-term and long-term goals, including specific plans for a career in teaching.
- Your resume listing scholarships, honors, performances, activities and professional music organization memberships, plus other pertinent information and experiences.
- A copy of your current transcript, including all courses in Music Education, current grades, and estimated date of graduation.
On the day of the competition, Applicants will participate in:
- A 10-15 minute interview with the judge during the 2026 Scholarship Competition on March 21, 2026, in Guzzetta Hall at The University of Akron.
- A performance of ONE PIECE from your primary instrument's performance category. *Please refer to the repertoire requirements on this page for instrument specific information.
Important Note: Applicants who fail to submit the required materials by the deadlines will be disqualified and will forfeit their application fees.
Dates
- Applications accepted online January 1 through February 1, 2026.
- Music Education Applicant materials (essay, resume, and transcript) must be submitted to scholarship@tuesdaymusical.org by March 1, 2026.
- Students who apply and are accepted will participate in the adjudicated, in-person competition on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Guzzetta Hall at The University of Akron, 157 University Ave., across from EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
- Winners will be announced Saturday, March 21 immediately following the competition.
Eligibility
- Students that have won first-place scholarships twice from Tuesday Musical in the past may not compete again in the same category.
- Applicants must be Ohio residents or studying with a college/university music teacher at an Ohio academic institution.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a music-degree program at a college or university.
- Students born before March 21, 1996, are not eligible to apply.
- Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the judges, whose decisions are final.
Application Fee
$40 is due during the initial application process. Fees are non-refundable. Fees will be returned only for applications that cannot be accepted; those refunds will be processed immediately after March 21, 2026.
Repertoire Requirements
2025 Repertoire Requirements for Music Education Applicants
- All repertoire that requires accompaniment must be performed with accompaniment.
- Only repertoire originally written for unaccompanied instrument or voice may be performed without an accompanist.
- If you have questions regarding acceptable repertoire or wish to receive a list of potential accompanists who may be available in the area, email scholarship@tuesdaymusical.org.
Music Education applicants must perform ONE WORK from the repertoire listed in your primary instrument's performance category listed below:
VOICE, selection performed memorized
A. One aria from an opera, oratorio or cantata
B. One art song in language other than English
C. One 20th-21st century classical composition in English
STRINGS, INCLUDING STRING BASS, one selection memorized
A. One movement from a Bach unaccompanied work
B. Two contrasting movements of a concerto
C. One Classical, Romantic, or Modern Composition
PIANO, selection performed memorized
A. One work by J.S. Bach, Handel, or Domenico Scarlatti
B. Two contrasting movements of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert
C. A work or group of works by a Romantic, 20th century, or 21st century composer
CLASSICAL GUITAR
A. One work by J. S. Bach
B. One piece in Classical or Romantic style
C. One 20th-21st Century composition (competitors may play their own compositions)
ORGAN
A. A contrapuntal piece by J.S. Bach.
B. One movement from a romantic work
C. One movement of a 20th-21st Century composition
WOODWINDS
FLUTE, one selection memorized
A. One movement of a Classical concerto
