Celebrating the magic of Leonard Bernstein
Lenny was a game changer and a rule breaker.
With music written and inspired by Leonard Bernstein, pianist Lara Downes is bringing her “For Lenny” concert to Akron.
“For Lenny” celebrates the legendary composer’s centennial with his own aptly named “Anniversaries for Piano,” new arrangements of his songs, and works dedicated to Bernstein by such leading American composers as John Corigliano.
Also on the program is a new work by Gregg Kallor, Tuesday Musical’s composer-in-residence. Kallor, who also is a pianist, composed The Answer is: Yes for Bernstein's 100th birthday and premiered it in October in the Catacombs of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where Bernstein is buried.
That piece will feature Downes and the Miller South Dance Ensemble. Under the direction of Ashley Watts, the dance ensemble comprises 17 students from Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Akron.
Lara's playing has been called “ravishing” by Fanfare Magazine, “luscious, moody and dreamy” by The New York Times, and “addicting” by the Huffington Post.
She collaborates with diverse leading artists, including folk icon Judy Collins, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, baritone Thomas Hampson, former U.S. Poet Laureate and Akron native Rita Dove, roots musician Rhiannon Giddens, and beatboxer and Pentatonix member Kevin “K.O.” Olusola.
To create a more intimate experience, seating is available only in the orchestra section.
