Virtuoso violinist returning to Akron
(and he's not coming alone)
With a career spanning 30-plus years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, conductor and director, Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists of our time.
Named music director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, he is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958, and recently renewed his contract through 2020.
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music.
Formed from a group of leading London musicians, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in 1959. Through unrivalled live performances and a vast recording output — highlights of which include the 1969 best-seller Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus — the Academy quickly gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished and refined sound.
Under Joshua Bell’s direction, the Academy continues to push the boundaries of play-directed performance to new heights, performing at prestigious venues around the globe — including Akron’s EJ Thomas Hall.
- The program will include Paganini’s brilliant Violin Concert No. 1, Op. 6, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98, with a first-movement ending that’s been hailed as one of the greatest climaxes in classical music.
- Before the concert: Learn about the Academy’s signature style of performing without a conductor during our intimate Concert Conversation with the musicians. 6:30 p.m. in EJ's Flying Balcony. Easily accessed by elevator, the Flying Balcony offers comfortable seating and a cash bar.
